Ever since the move, offspring #2 has been bugging me to take off his training wheels and teach him how to ride a “2-wheeler.” I kept putting it off - mostly because I didn’t think he was really ready and also because moving in takes a lot of time.

So, yesterday morning, the neighbor offers to let us borrow a small bike of theirs that has no training wheels. Makes sense to me…don’t have to take off training wheels and then put them back on if things don’t go well. No problem. Well, wifey calls me just after lunch to tell me that he couldn’t wait any more, got on it, and rode off. All this to shouts of “Get off, I don’t have the camera” and “You need to wait until Dad comes home.” All the while, in his head, I know he’s shouting, “I’m tired of waiting for you people. NO, REALLY, I GOT IT!” I just hope he doesn’t start asking to drive soon.

We took a tour of the Arizona Memorial today. Quite a sobering experience to be in the middle of Pearl Harbor - imagining the site of Japanese airplanes raining down death. I’m sure you’ve seen the black and white videos - somehow, the lack of color helps you stay separated from the event. But when you’re out there on the water and everything is in color, it adds a new element to it. It’s a lot easier to imagine what it would have been like to be there when it happened…and it makes you appreciate the courage it took to stare the enemy down and fight back.
